Club Spotlight: The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Club

Club Spotlight AI Club

In a world increasingly driven by technology, the Artificial Intelligence Club (AI Club) at CUNY SPS stands at the forefront of student innovation. Founded this semester by the former Software Development Club, the AI Club is a vibrant, inclusive space where students gather to explore, learn, and create using artificial intelligence.

Under the leadership of club president Dennys Antunish, a BS Information Science major, and supported by a dynamic team—Vice President Jason Charles, also majoring in BS Information Science; Treasurer Katerina L. Archer, a BA Communications and Media major; and Secretary Amanda Rivera, a BS Health Information Management major—the AI Club is redefining what student tech communities can look like.

At its core, the AI Club is dedicated to educating, empowering, engaging, and advocating for ethical AI development. The club’s mission is ambitious: to envision a future where students from all backgrounds harness artificial intelligence to drive innovation, solve real-world problems, and contribute to a more ethical and intelligent society. This vision is realized through a range of activities designed to cater to diverse interests and skill levels.

The AI Club offers a variety of engaging events and initiatives, including:

  • Interactive Workshops and Discussions: Members participate in AI-driven discussions and hands-on workshops that demystify complex concepts and encourage active learning.
  • Mini Hackathons: These events not only foster a spirit of collaboration but also help members enhance their technical skills in a fun, competitive setting.
  • Social and Networking Meetups: From AI-themed game nights to social meetups, the club creates ample opportunities for students to bond over shared interests.
  • Ethics and Real-World Applications: Open discussions on AI ethics challenge members to think critically about the implications of technology in today’s world, promoting responsible innovation.
  • Project-Based Learning: Group research initiatives and hands-on projects allow members to apply AI knowledge practically, preparing them for future technological challenges.

The AI Club collaborates closely with the Information Science program and the Student Life office to ensure that its initiatives are well integrated within the campus community. This synergy not only broadens the club’s reach but also enriches its events with interdisciplinary perspectives.

This semester, the club is launching three major initiatives:

AI Club Contest – Call for Entries: This creative contest invites members to submit AI-generated images that visually represent the club for use in media and digital platforms. Submissions must include the text “AI Club” and “CUNY SPS” and adhere to specific guidelines to ensure fairness and creativity. The deadline to submit is April 18, 2025. For more details and to submit your entry, visit the AI Club website.

Raspberry Pi Initiative: A proposal is on the table to allocate a budget for acquiring Raspberry Pi devices—small, affordable single-board computers ideal for programming, AI projects, and hands-on learning. This initiative promises to open up new avenues for experimentation with AI models and smart devices. To learn more about “Raspberry Pi, watch this YouTube video.

AI Club Podcast with Notebook LM: As part of its commitment to innovation and accessibility, the AI Club has launched a brand-new student-led podcast series, created using Google Notebook LM. This series serves as a dynamic platform for members to explore timely topics in artificial intelligence, offering short, engaging episodes that dive into cutting-edge developments in the field.

Recent episodes have tackled critical themes such as Prompt Engineering Techniques, Nexus: Yuval Noah Harari’s reflections on AI and the human crisis, and a breakdown of the Stanford AI Index 2024. Whether you’re new to AI or deeply immersed in the field, the podcast offers thoughtful commentary and digestible insights for all listeners. To learn more, visit the club’s website.
