Editor’s Note: Lourdes Quinteros, MA in Disability Studies, is the president of the CUNY SPS Mental Health Club, which was founded during the Fall 2024 semester.
Our mission is to foster a supportive and inclusive community that promotes mental health awareness, education, and resources among students. We aim to empower individuals to prioritize their mental well-being, reduce stigma, and create a safe space for open dialogue about mental health challenges and solutions. Through workshops, events, and peer support, we strive to enhance resilience and promote overall wellness within the CUNY SPS community.
On September 20, we held an information session to invite students to join our Mental Health Club, promoting a positive environment and inclusion on our campus. We hope to create a supportive space where students can share their struggles, strengths, and camaraderie within CUNY SPS.
We haven’t held any events yet, but we are planning a Mental Health Week from December 2 to 6. We hope to have a 30-minute session each day to explore ways to improve our mental health, overcome obstacles in our daily lives, and create a positive environment on campus. Members of our clubs are developing their own workshops to host during the week, and we aim to dedicate each session to different topics within mental health that people should consider.
I decided to join the club because I like helping others and also take pride ino practicing positive mental health hygiene. I want to be a mentor one day and help other students or people that have challenges in regards to mental health so that we can come together and support one another.
It’s a great club to join and we welcome anyone who wants to be positively supported by our organization and wants to be included in an environment that practices positive mental health awareness.
