CUNY SPS’ Club Week started on February 18, hosting several new clubs, including the CUNY SPS Film & Television Club on February 22. The Film & Television Club is a sequel to the former Film Club, according to CUNY SPS Student Life Coordinator Parshotam Lal. The Kiosk previously profiled the club a few years back in detail.

The original Film Club started in February 2021 and was founded by CUNY SPS BA in Communication and Media alumni Nori Pérez and Joseph Caffrey with the support of CM’s Academic Director Elizabeth Alsop and Associate Director of Student Life Anthony Sweeney. The former Film Club operated remotely, according to the past Film Club’s Instagram

The first item on the new club’s agenda was the club leadership election, including the Film & Television Club President, who will coordinate the logistics for movie night, and the Club Treasurer, who will finalize the budget for upcoming events. Next, the club leaders decided on a time to hold its general meetings, on the third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.

The students of the CUNY SPS community who signed up and attended the Film & Television Club orientation session had never been a part of a film club before and had zero expectations from this newly formed club with “Television” in the title. A few students joined the Film & Television Club to flex their love for film and television while interacting with others who share the same interests, specifically sharing openly about seeing the classics.

Later, club members discussed organizing an outdoor movie night and plans to screen arthouse films to explore cinematic styles and genres. The group also talked about popular movies and TV shows for future meetings.

It has not been decided who will be the current advisor yet for the Film & Television Club. Members engage in conversation remotely over WhatsApp and General Meetings take place on Zoom.

Lal mentioned how he personally came up with this idea, considering how successful the Film Club was in the CUNY SPS community a few semesters ago. He also shared how Student Life aims to reignite student interest in this club. “The addition of ‘Television’ expands the options available to students, hoping to increase engagement and membership,” Lal said.
